Things I've learnt from playing the Project X Zone demo

I was gonna make a delayed post on my thoughts of E3 2013, but I just don't feel like it. So, my summarized thoughts on E3 are:
1. Microsoft lost.
2. Sony won by burning the crap out of Microsoft (plus, dat price tag) despite sneaking in the 5$ a month PS+ membership thing to play multiplayer online.
3. And Nintendo got second. Pokemon was awesome (expected a new type there), and Smash Bros. is awesome as hell (MEGA MAN!!!!!!).

Now back to the main topic of this post.

Project X Zone is a game that was on my wish list for quite a while and is released in the US on the 25th June (which is tomorrow as of this post). Being a turn-based strategy game like Fire Emblem that featured characters from Namco Bandai, Sega, and most importantly Capcom, it looks really fun.

One of my main worry is how the battles may get tedious since you'll be fighting a lot of enemies (and some really powerful ones too), and unlike Fire Emblem, your battle phase animation cannot be skipped (which I'll get to it later). However, trying the demo out made me think otherwise, and this may be a great game.

The current demo out on the eshop is Demo A (there will be a Demo B out sometime around the release of PXZ). After using up all the tries on this demo (which there are only 5 of them), I was able to figure out some stuff about it. Note, what is mentioned here may or may not be true since this is what I've figured out from the game (my personal experience, and not from any guidebooks).

1. Each battle sequence is unique.
When you enter a battle, you press the 'A' button to attack. Using the directional buttons will give you different attacks (there's a list of available moves for your character). Also, you could call out your solo unit (which is a single character unlike your main unit, which are paired up characters like Ryu and Ken of Street Fighter) and even call out a supporting unit (which is a paired up unit nearby you) to extend your combos. The point of this combos is to build up your XP bar, which acts like mana or MP (and I'll get to that later). Also, doing combos on characters with shield is extremely important as dropping the combo enables them to reactivate their shield, and you need another attack to break that barrier.
In addition to performing combos, if you're able to perform each possible move that your character has (that isn't the super move), you're entitled for an additional attack to extend the combo.
The amount of damage you deal to the opponent depends on timing. If you timed your characters attack properly (as well as the assists), your attacks will hit the opponent more and you'll inflict more damage to them.

2. XP are important.
As mentioned earlier, extending your combos build up your XP bar. XP can be used for a few things.
Firstly, when being attacked by an enemy, you can use your XP to counter the opponent, defend the attack and receive less damage, or do a full defend and nullify the damage received.
You can also use XP to perform certain skills. These skills range from healing yourself, to increasing the range of your attack, or even keep the juggling height of your opponent constant for certain combo setups.
Also, with 100XP, you can use it to perform a very damaging super move on the enemy.

3. Items.
There's a few items I noticed during the demo. There's items that heals your HP, and some that recovers some XP, and lastly items that recovers status conditions. I also notice that by defeating the boss in the demo, I received something that I think is an equip item. This means that you can equip items to characters to give them better stats or maybe even additional effects to complement the skills they already have.

I guess that's about everything I learnt from the demo (from what I've remembered on the top of my head). Note that there's no need for button mashing during combat, just a perfectly timed button press will do.

I hope this game is gonna be awesome. I can't wait to use my favourite Capcom characters as well as other characters from other fighting games.
