The course I'm studying in university

So, if you're still here (or you're actually following my blog for some other reason) then here's my first post which is not an introductory post.

If you read my first post then you would know that I just started my life as a university student. So I bet you're wondering what course am I studying.

Well, I'm in the taking Bachelor of Science (Food Science & Technology) in the School of Science in my campus. But there must be a reason why I'm specifically taking this course right? Yes, you're right. There is a reason why I chose this course.

Two years ago, I was taking Cambridge A-Levels in my college. The reason why I took A-Levels is because back then, I was uncertain on what to further my studies to, but I know that I want to do something that is related to Biology since I love Biology.

It wasn't until late December of 2010 when I realise what I want to do. And I had this epiphany during a family vacation to U.S.A. What I'm going to write now will be my thoughts on the things I saw during this trip, and it may or may not offend some people. So don't go all mad at me, I'm just merely stating my opinion.

What I notice was that a lot of US citizens were really obese. Obesity strikes in 3 of 5 people from the way I see it. Also, fast food, while cheap, were really unhealthy since it's way too salty and the carbonated drinks that come with it were sweet too. The portions were really huge too, which I think was one of the factors contributing to this problem that the US is facing.

But why is all this happening? When we went to Walmart to buy groceries to cook food at the place we're staying, I can't help but notice that the fruits and veges were quite expensive compared to fast food. Add that to the fact that many people prefer fast food over them makes them not see a reason to buy them.

Then I realised, so that's why weight losing reality shows are so successful in the States, because there is a niche there. But you know what other niche is there over there? A niche for making cheaper, healthier food for everyone. And that made me take Food Science and Technology.

So that's the story behind the reason why I took the course. Before I end this, I apologize to anyone who is offended by what I typed in my blog, or that I might be missing something in the bigger picture of things happening in the US that I do not know. Let me remind you again that I'm just voicing out my thoughts so if you wanna comment I'll be more than happy to hear another opinion, since knowing more is always better. But do not post flame mails or whatever you call it since I don't really care about those.

That's all for now.
