I've always liked fighting games since I was a kid. The first one I played was Virtua Fighter 2, and it was great. While most people grew up with Street Fighter an other 2D fighters, I was raised in the 3D-Polygonal fighters like Tekken 3.
It was fun, cuz it was simple to pick up. You could just button mash 3 4 with Eddy and own people. Tekken 5 was even fun. But then after that, I didn't liked Tekken that much. That was when I found out that there is this juggling mechanic in the games.
While the combos were flashy I guess, I didn't really like how it made no sense (in their juggling mechanic). It was like you try to make your characters as realistic as possible, but you gave them a fighting mechanic that defies physics in a way that Julia can scoop a heavy guy like Marduk off the ground and then follow up with combos that send him to Julia's shoulder height. When characters jump in this game, they're subjected to normal gravity, but why does it seem so floaty when they fall or are being juggled.
That's when I started playing Street Fighter. But I was rather late since I started with the SFIV/SSFIV series. It took me a while to understand the basics and how to execute specials and supers and stuff, but now I could play the game knowing what I'm doing (even if its just a simple combo since I'm just an average player).
Even thought Street Fighter has attacks that makes no sense like the Hadouken and Guile's Sonic Boom, I can still accept it. Their jump heights are absurdly high, but it's alright since for me, there's little logic behind how the characters can do a Hadouken or Raging Demon and how no human (for now) could do it. So when they could jump twice their height, seems legit. Juggling seems fine as the gravity the characters are subjected to while being juggled is the same gravity they are subjected to while they're jumping.
Anyways, now back to the main point of this post (yeah, quite a rant I made didn't I). Street Fighter III 3rd Strike seems really nice, and has a gameplay mechanic that have stood the test of time, but I've never played it before. So I was able to practice on it recently, and it was hard.
I've only just recently been able to reach Gill (the final boss for those who don't know) after playing several times on the default difficulty since I have a habit of not continuing, and he didn't even need to use any of his supers on me cuz he whopped my ass. I was using Ken, and my rival battle was with Urien. I thought by fighting him I could learn a bit more on how to face Gill, but then I realise that some of Urien's moves that were unsafe were safe when Gill is using it.
It's a hard game, but I kinda enjoy it. The style and the music is amazing, but unappreciated. I could practice with it, hopefully my SF skills can improve greatly. But I need to think of a strategy on how to fight Gill. Oh, I learned how to parry projectiles with ease, unless they're quick 2 hit ones like the Shakunetsu Hadouken.
Time to master the 3rd and one of the best installments of the Street Fighter series gameplay wise.
