Olympics talk

Hey there.

So I don't update this blog that often, but sometimes it's just about posting the right thing at the right time (or maybe that's just an excuse for being lazy). Anyways, sometimes, you have to post something to fit the current mood of the audience I guess, and I think a lot of people has been hit by Olympic fever.

The 2012 Olympics just begin last Friday. Unfortunately I did not watch the opening ceremony live since there is a 7 hour time difference between Malaysia and London, and I don't really feel like waking up at 4 a.m. I heard there's a pretty big hype about all that's going on in the ceremony, like James Bond, Marry Poppins, Peter Pan and even Lord Voldemort appearing, heck even Sir Paul Mccartney and Rowan Atkinson (as Mr. Bean) performed.

While I do not know how good the opening ceremony is since I did not even watch it, I'm sure it's a pretty good show (though I don't think it's better or even close to being as good as the Beijing one since that one is pretty stellar). What I did notice was some over exaggeration of the ceremony by British Prime Minister, David Cameron.

When I was watching the Olympic highlights on Youtube, there came a point where they asked the crowd on what they thought of the performance. Of course the PM is part of the people watching the show too, so they also have to ask him right? Well, yea. But the praises that he said were a bit too much. In my opinion, complimenting something/someone is good. But when done excessively, it sounds like butt-fucking. Again, I do apologize to anyone I've offended by this statement but that's just my thoughts.

If you listen carefully of his statement he mentions the words 'brilliant', and 'beautiful' or any of its synonyms a tad too much (or maybe that's just me). In my honest opinion, I short and simple comment praising the ceremony would suffice from a person like his ranks. But that's just me, cuz I think that he knew what is going to happen in the ceremony (for the most parts). Feel free to correct me though, cuz I might be wrong. Don't flame me.

Back to Olympic talk, with the Olympics, we'll have plenty of countries coming and hoping to get gold and make their country proud. Personally, I would love to have my country get gold on something. Unfortunately, despite having the Women's World No.1 player in squash, the Olympics don't play that sport. So we only have badminton to depend on, and that means we'll rely on Lee Chong Wei to get the gold.

All us Malaysians can do is hope that this time, he defeats his adversary Lin Dan.

First week of uni has ended

What are my thoughts?

University life is great. It really teaches me to be more of an independent learner (and not rely on spoon feeding by lecturers) because if I enter a class unprepared, I might be lost when the lecturer is teaching as they go in a fast (and sometimes boring) pace which I need to get used to.

At least there is internet access in the campus, so I could do online assignments in the uni while waiting for the next class to begin. Though it was really confusing at first for me on trying to access the wifi.

Though I realise two problems that I face in this uni. One of those would be finding a parking spot for my car. Some of my classes begins in the afternoon, and finding a parking spot is more like a test of luck than patience as it's full by the time I arrive for my afternoon lecture. All I do is pray that I'm following a student who is going to get to his/her car and go home/elsewhere. So parking spots are very limited if you come late.

But another big problem I have is the timetable I have. I was told in my orientation week that we were given 'freedom' to plan how our timetable for our lectures will be. Unfortunately, some of the lecture times were fixed already. My initial plans of getting a timetable where there would be weekday of did not happen as the fixed lecture times covered the whole weekday.

Not only that, my timetable gets really intense on Thursday and Friday. The thing with my timetable is that I spend progressively more hours attending lab and lectures in the campus as the weekday passes. For example, I have 2 hours of lecture on Monday, 3 hours on Tuesday, 4 on Wednesday, 6 on Thursday and 7 hours of lecture on Friday.

So you might be thinking, 2 classes on Monday, isn't it suppose to be a good thing as you can start your week slow? Well, its not for me. I would prefer a balanced timetable where the number of hours spent is equally split each day. But other than the timetable, I do not have any problems with my uni at the moment.

And that concludes my first week of university life. It's pretty nice overall except on Thursday and Friday where I come home really feeling like taking my sleep immediately. But I guess these are the things where you have to get used to as go from a college student to a uni freshman.

The course I'm studying in university

So, if you're still here (or you're actually following my blog for some other reason) then here's my first post which is not an introductory post.

If you read my first post then you would know that I just started my life as a university student. So I bet you're wondering what course am I studying.

Well, I'm in the taking Bachelor of Science (Food Science & Technology) in the School of Science in my campus. But there must be a reason why I'm specifically taking this course right? Yes, you're right. There is a reason why I chose this course.

Two years ago, I was taking Cambridge A-Levels in my college. The reason why I took A-Levels is because back then, I was uncertain on what to further my studies to, but I know that I want to do something that is related to Biology since I love Biology.

It wasn't until late December of 2010 when I realise what I want to do. And I had this epiphany during a family vacation to U.S.A. What I'm going to write now will be my thoughts on the things I saw during this trip, and it may or may not offend some people. So don't go all mad at me, I'm just merely stating my opinion.

What I notice was that a lot of US citizens were really obese. Obesity strikes in 3 of 5 people from the way I see it. Also, fast food, while cheap, were really unhealthy since it's way too salty and the carbonated drinks that come with it were sweet too. The portions were really huge too, which I think was one of the factors contributing to this problem that the US is facing.

But why is all this happening? When we went to Walmart to buy groceries to cook food at the place we're staying, I can't help but notice that the fruits and veges were quite expensive compared to fast food. Add that to the fact that many people prefer fast food over them makes them not see a reason to buy them.

Then I realised, so that's why weight losing reality shows are so successful in the States, because there is a niche there. But you know what other niche is there over there? A niche for making cheaper, healthier food for everyone. And that made me take Food Science and Technology.

So that's the story behind the reason why I took the course. Before I end this, I apologize to anyone who is offended by what I typed in my blog, or that I might be missing something in the bigger picture of things happening in the US that I do not know. Let me remind you again that I'm just voicing out my thoughts so if you wanna comment I'll be more than happy to hear another opinion, since knowing more is always better. But do not post flame mails or whatever you call it since I don't really care about those.

That's all for now.

1st post

Hello Internet.

If you stumble upon this blog, then hi. I'm a University student who've never made a blog before. I'm currently doing this as my side project and checking how blog works.

In this blog you'll find me talking about a whole lot of my life in my uni (I study in Monash University Sunway Campus, by the way), and my interests, and some rants of modern life.

I guess that's all I can say for my first post, so yea.....
